There are two theorists which I have researched when looking into characters these were Tzvetan Todorov and Vladimir Propp. Propp had seven main characters that he analysed out of 100 tales these were:
1.The villain (struggles against the hero)
2.The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
3.The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
4.The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
5.Her father
6.The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
7.The hero or victim/seeker hero, reacts to the donor, weds the princess
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_theory_(Media)#Propp.27s_Character_theory)
From this character analysis I came to the conclusion that my main character James would be the hero who at first dumped Lily but then gained her back. Lily my other main character would be the princess who the hero eventually gets together with. Whilst Becky who was in my film would be the villian as she was the girl that Lewis was with just after breaking up with Lily.
The lead role in my film is James whilst Lily gains most of the sympathy from the audience which challenges the conventions as most of the time in a romantic drama the lead role will gain the audiences sympathy straight away.
Lily:
Lily is a lower class girl although this isn't shown in the trailer she is lower than James. She is very keen to please and is desperate to have James notice her. She has many friends who she always turns to when needed and she is devastated when things don't turn out for her.
James:
James is a little bit upper class in the film which can be seen from the clothing of the long jacket he wears although he is generally in a tshirt and jeans it is shown through his actions rather than clothing. He is a very strong character who gets on with most people but struggles to understand girls.
Becky:
Becky is the girl that Lewis goes off with for a short period of time she is a shy girl who comes out of her shell a lot when she is around James. However, she knwos that she isn't the girl for him.
I used Todorov's theory of the Equilibrium, disequilibrium and a renewed equilibrium. I used this for my film as I wanted to use the common conventions of a teaseer trailer.

Good research Kelly, and you make sensible connections with your production and the character types.
